How many slides should a TikTok slideshow have? In our sample of 3,715 public Photo Mode posts, the typical post had 6 slides, and half had between 3 and 10. About one in eight was a single image, and about one in ten ran to 21 slides or more. That tells you what’s normal, not what performs best. The right count for your post is however many it takes to finish the idea.
For example, a “five songs for a rainy commute” post needs about six slides: a title slide and five picks. A nostalgic photo dump might run to twenty. The rest of this page breaks the numbers down by length, by subject and by account, so you can see where your idea fits.
What’s in the sample?
3,715 public TikTok Photo Mode posts from 1,128 creators, collected in September 2026 and published between 2022 and mid-September 2026. The accounts are faceless slideshow pages across many subjects, not only music pages. It isn’t a random sample of TikTok, and we didn’t record performance in a way we’d publish.
The full method is on our Photo Mode research methodology page. The points that matter for reading the numbers below:
- Slide counts exclude the cover. In 3,713 of the 3,715 posts, the export listed a cover thumbnail as the first image, which isn’t a slide anyone swipes through. We removed it before counting.
- The top end is cut off. 99 posts hit the 35-image limit of the collection tool, so some longer carousels were probably cut short. Read “21–35” as “21 or more.”
- Subject labels are ours. We assigned them while collecting, not TikTok.
- We don’t publish views or saves from this data. Counts were recorded without reliable timestamps and the sample favors popular posts, so it can’t tell you which length gets more reach.
How many slides do TikTok slideshows usually have?
The median was 6 slides and the mean 8.5, across a range of 1 to 35. About 43% of posts had five slides or fewer, and about 76% had ten or fewer. The single most common count was one image (479 posts), followed by two and then six.
| Slides | Posts | Share of posts |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 479 | 12.9% |
| 2–5 | 1,125 | 30.3% |
| 6–10 | 1,216 | 32.7% |
| 11–20 | 526 | 14.2% |
| 21 or more | 369 | 9.9% |
| All posts | 3,715 | 100% |
The most common individual counts:
| Slides | Posts |
|---|---|
| 1 | 479 |
| 2 | 407 |
| 6 | 391 |
| 3 | 305 |
| 7 | 279 |
| 5 | 256 |
Two things stand out. First, there are two common shapes: a short post of one to three images, and a mid-length post of five to eight. Second, the long tail is real. Roughly one post in four had more than ten slides.
Does the typical slide count change by subject?
Yes, quite a lot. Among subjects with at least 60 posts, typical length ran from 2 slides (careers) to 9 (spirituality and philosophy). Fashion and relationship pages often posted a single image, while food, home and parenting pages clustered around seven or eight slides.
Each subject below includes 26 to 37 creators, so a single account can’t drive the result, but these are still a sample’s habits, not rules.
| Subject (our label) | Posts | Median slides | Middle half | Single image | 21+ slides |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fashion | 165 | 5 | 1–6 | 27% | 1% |
| Food and nutrition | 146 | 7 | 6–9 | 8% | 0% |
| Self-improvement | 144 | 5 | 5–6 | 2% | 6% |
| Relationships | 141 | 5 | 1–6 | 30% | 2% |
| Fitness and wellness | 120 | 6 | 2–7 | 7% | 1% |
| History and culture | 104 | 6 | 2–10 | 4% | 4% |
| Education | 100 | 6 | 4–11 | 4% | 16% |
| Books and writing | 97 | 3 | 2–7 | 8% | 2% |
| Shopping and products | 90 | 7 | 5–8 | 3% | 2% |
| Psychology and wellbeing | 78 | 6 | 3–7 | 6% | 3% |
| Home and interiors | 72 | 7.5 | 6–10 | 7% | 0% |
| Entertainment and fandom | 65 | 6 | 5–9 | 6% | 8% |
| Personal finance | 63 | 4 | 2–5 | 17% | 2% |
| Careers | 62 | 2 | 2–6 | 10% | 6% |
| Spirituality and philosophy | 61 | 9 | 2–13 | 25% | 5% |
| Beauty and grooming | 61 | 3 | 3–7 | 5% | 10% |
| Parenting and family | 60 | 8 | 7–9 | 8% | 3% |
“Middle half” is the range covering the middle 50% of posts in that subject.
A loose pattern runs through the table: subjects that lend themselves to lists, recipes or room tours (food, home, shopping, parenting) sit in the seven-to-eight range, while fashion and relationship pages, where a single outfit or quote can carry the post, often stop at one.
What about mood-based slideshows?
Mood posts varied the most. Nostalgia posts ran long, with a median around 30 slides and three in four at 21 or more. Romance and coming-of-age posts were in the low teens. Lyric-style mood posts were short, typically two slides. Each of these groups comes from fewer creators, so treat them as rougher.
We ran extra collection rounds for moods that general searches turned up less often. These are the groups with at least 10 creators:
| Mood (our label) | Posts | Creators | Median slides | 21+ slides |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nostalgia and past eras | 112 | 20 | 29.5 | 75% |
| Romance and longing | 84 | 19 | 11 | 31% |
| Lyric-style mood posts | 56 | 10 | 2 | 4% |
| Identity and coming of age | 50 | 13 | 13 | 16% |
| Grief and loss | 29 | 10 | 8 | 14% |
The nostalgia figure is affected by the 35-image limit, so its real median may be higher. For musicians, these are the most relevant groups, because mood is usually where a song fits. A nostalgic song can live in a long photo dump. A lyric-led idea usually doesn’t need more than a couple of slides.
Does the same creator always use the same length?
No. Among the 139 creators with at least five posts in the sample, the typical creator’s own median was 7 slides, but their shortest and longest posts were usually about 8 slides apart. Even consistent pages change length to fit the post.
A few other cuts showed little difference:
| Split | Posts | Median slides |
|---|---|---|
| Sound flagged as “original” by TikTok | 2,439 | 6 |
| Sound not flagged as original | 1,276 | 6 |
| Published in 2023 | 549 | 6 |
| Published in 2024 | 615 | 7 |
| Published in 2025 | 993 | 6 |
| Published in 2026 (to mid-September) | 1,524 | 6 |
We didn’t listen to the audio, so the “original” flag only tells you how TikTok labeled the sound, not whose music it was. The median stayed at six or seven slides in every year we checked.
How should a musician use these numbers?
Start from the idea, then check it against the typical range. A list of five things needs about six slides. A single striking image or quote can be one. A mood dump can run long. If your post is far outside the range for its subject, make sure every slide earns its place.
| Your idea | Typical shape in the sample | A sensible starting point |
|---|---|---|
| Ranked list or recommendations | List-friendly subjects (food, shopping, home) have a median around 7 | A title slide plus one slide per item |
| One quote, lyric or image | Lyric-style mood posts typically 2 | 1–3 slides |
| Story or before/after | Not labeled separately in our data | Enough slides to reach the ending, and no more |
| Nostalgia or aesthetic dump | Often 21+ | As many as hold the mood; cut repeats |
| How-to or explainer | Education median 6, with 16% at 21+ | One step per slide |
Then test it on your own account. Compare posts of different lengths at the same age (for example, three days after posting), with the same song section, and look at saves and shares rather than views alone. Our Photo Mode guide for musicians covers how to build the slides, and how to make a TikTok slideshow with your song walks through adding the sound.
Common questions
Is six slides the best length for a TikTok slideshow?
Six is the typical length in our sample, not a proven best. We didn’t measure which length gets more reach. Use enough slides to finish the idea, then compare your own posts.
What’s the maximum number of slides on TikTok?
Our collection recorded up to 35 images, and 99 posts hit that limit, so some carousels were probably longer. Check the current limit in the TikTok app when you post.
Do single-image posts count as slideshows?
Yes. In our data, single-image posts were Photo Mode posts like the rest. They were 12.9% of our sample, and most common on fashion and relationship pages.
Do longer slideshows get more views?
This dataset can’t say. View counts weren’t recorded with reliable timestamps, and the sample favors popular posts. Test lengths on your own account at the same post age.
Your next steps
- Write the idea in one sentence, then count how many slides it needs to finish.
- Check that count against the subject or mood table above.
- Make two versions of the same idea at different lengths, with the same song section.
- Compare saves and shares three days after posting, then keep the shape that works for your audience.
